Monday night was a treat was for the wrestling fans and the world of combat sport is still abuzz about it. When the UFC welterweight contender Ben Askren returned to the wrestling mats against the world champion Jordan Burroughs, it was indeed a delight match. The two best fighters of the world were facing each other at the annual Beat the Streets competition, a charity event that raises money for youth outreach programs. As expected, it didn’t take Burroughs long to defeat Askren by 11-0, winning by technical fall in the second period.
Post-fight, the legendary 30-year old Burroughs stated, “Today the MMA world and the wrestling world butted heads and everybody loved it.” Wrestling great Jordan Burroughs has won five world championships and a gold medal at 74 kg at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Interestingly, Burroughs, one of the greatest champions in U.S. amateur wrestling history, recently expressed his willingness to try MMA at least once. And if Jordan Burroughs is serious about fighting in the cage, then UFC president Dana White would also be very interested to welcome him to the octagon.
On Tuesday, the UFC President Dana White appeared on the Jim Rome Show where host, Jim Rome discussed how Burroughs dominated over the MMA star. It was on this show that White expressed his interest in working with Jordan Burroughs, in case the legendary wrestler wants to make the move to MMA. “Yeah, listen, I’m always interested in, you know, these guys that are considered the best athletes in whatever it is they do wanting to come to the UFC. Yeah, obviously I’d be very interested,” said UFC Head Honcho Dana White.
‘Funky’ Ben Askren, a former Olympian himself, is a top UFC welterweight contender, former Bellator, and ONE Championship king. This proficient freestyle wrestler had made a transition to MMA after competing at the 2008 Olympic Games. Askren, who is undefeated in MMA, made his UFC debut against Robbie Lawler back in March.
“Askren is a very interesting guy,” White said. “He and I have a long history of smack talk between us, and then he retired and was interested in coming into the UFC, and I think the timing is everything, and the timing was right for him to come, and he’s been fun since he’s been here.”
Wrestling has given UFC the greatest MMA fighters over the years. In fact, the UFC already boasts some of the Olympic medalists like Mark Schultz and Kevin Jackson. If Burroughs also makes a transition to the UFC, he is definitely going to become one of the best wrestlers to enter the octagon. Last month, Burroughs said, “I just want to fight one time. That’s it! I just want one fight. Because like for me, it’s not about the status, not about the glory. It’s not about the money. Like, I just want to throw my hands and see what I’m made of. And I think that wrestlers and fighters have that same fighting spirit. Like there’s just a spirit about you that it’s such a beautiful art form in which you can implement a strategy in order to subdue another individual. And I really feel like that’s in wrestling and UFC we’re kind of, we collaborate in that way. I’ve always thought about it. I’ve considered it when I was young, I was like, ‘listen, I’m going to fight. I want to be a star. I’m going to fight.”
